Insiders recipe book
I was helping a friend who had moved in to Salem recently when the rumble of hunger hit my stomach. Now when I lived in Manhattan, our entire kitchen consisted of a three ring binder chock full of take out/delivery menus. Come to think of it my college kitchen was like that too. Luckily for me I had a few numbers for local pizza joints on my phone because she had no menus at all.
I think the best way to see your new town and meet people is by going out to dinner at the local restaurants, and insiders know that we have some great eats here in Salem. But there are times that you just need some quick take out or delivery. That got me thinking, what are the must have menu’s in your kitchen?
Take Out / Delivery Menus in Salem
- DeLeo’s – Pizza & Subs – Take Out & Delivery
- Engine House – Pizza, Subs, Pasta – Take Out & Delivery
- Upper Crust – flat pizza – Take Out & Delivery
- Hong Kong King – Chineese – Take Out & Delivery
- Bangkok Paradise – Thai (not sushi) – Take Out
- Asahi – Sushi – Take Out
- Cafe Kushco – Sandwiches - Take Out & Delivery
- Mandee’s Pizza – Pizza & Subs – Take Out & Delivery (also offers on-line ordering)
- Passage to India – Indian – Take Out
What we don’t have here in Salem is a good quality Mexican restaurant where you can get a taco or burrito. Cilantro is excellent but not really the place for this type of food and Edgewater is great for drinks but just plain sucks for food.
If you want more info about any of the restaurants on our list head over to our restaurant review page. I’m sure there are a few menus in your kitchen drawer that didn’t make this list. Tell us what they are and why we should put them on the list essential Take Out and/or Delivery menus for Salem.

Bangkok does provide delivery. We’ve been relying on them for the past few years. Fresh Taste of Asia does take-out as well. Mandee’s delivers too. Cilantro used to have the “Taste of Cilantro” take-out window, but alas that’s no more.
I’ve never been able to get delivery from Bangkok, maybe they don’t like me. As for Fresh Taste, do you think they should be a “must have” menu? Their sushi isn’t as good as Asahi and their Chinese food is on par with the other Chinese take out around town. I’ll add Mandee’s on your suggestion. Thanks.
Salem DESPERATELY needs a burrito place (like Viva Burrito or Anna’s Taqueria)! We don’t need anymore “upscale” eateries. We need MORE take-out joints.
Sun Garden’s crab rangoon are to die for. My favorite chinese place. Take out and delivery.
Passage to India does Indian take out (no delivery), and it usually my top choice for take out.
Hmm, we used to frequent Fresh Taste and have done Asahi too. I only do vegetable maki, so I was pleased with that and chicken katsu. I’ve never really done their Chinese, though.
Bangkok has an entry in my phone’s contact list. I’ve only been told no delivery on a really busy holiday, or before 5:00pm. It usually works out well!
Mexican restaurants are lacking but I actually like Edgewater yet haven’t tried Cilantro. I’ll have to give it a shot. Thanks for the tidbits.
I’ll add another vote for Mandee’s – I have them programmed onto my mobile phone. Also, Passage to India is my most frequent take-out joint; their food is always SO tasty.
Burritos, I agree. We NEED a good, fast, inexpensive burrito place.
Gourmet Garden for sushi, Japanese and Chinese.. although not in Salem proper (Swampscott in fact? does this eliminate them from the list?) and take out only, they provide really really great quality. Great for us S Salem residents…
Julia,
I think that because they are in Swampscott they are eliminated but, thanks for the info and my guess is that they might be quicker for delivery to S. Salem than some of our down town establishments.
I think Taste of Asia is the best chinese in town, but I don’t do sushi, so can’t judge that. For takeout I’m loving Ruthy’s Kitchen on Collins Cove. Good home cooked meals ready to pop in the oven to heat. Try the mac and cheese (sometimes with ham or peas and bacon in it) or Beef Lasagna. Comfort food at its best.
For Mexican, i don’t hate Edgewater, but for truly great mexican you have to cross the bridge and hit Cielito Lindo in Beverly. Guacamole made in front of you, and the best sangria ever. Love love love it. I know, not in Salem, but damn close.
Passage to India should be on the list.
Geoff,
I agree about Cielito Lindo, too bad they cant open up shop on this side of the bridge.
