Wine in Salem, where’s the sommeiler

Written by admin on March 4th, 2008 4 Comments

If you are a regular reader of TheSalemInsider.com then you may have noticed an article or two about Salem Wine Imports. This new business has done a great job of trying to get the word out about their shop. Eric, the owner is happy to help wine lovers and novices alike and they offer weekly wine tastings every Tuesday night, tonight they are featuring Bordeaux tasting.

Salem’s affinity with wine doesn’t end there (nor did it start there). Pamplemousse, Salem’s eclectically cute home, kitchen and bath store on Essex St. has been in the wine business for years. They stock a variety of wines, meads and micro brews. They also offer tastings
(I recall plenty of them on Sunday afternoons during tourist season) and the occasional wine class. Now Pamplemousse along with local art / craft gallery The Picklepot is hosting a celebration of food and wine.

Spring Fling: a Garden of Earthy Delights

Fashioned after the Bacchanalia - a religious festival in honor of the wine god Bacchus – Spring Fling -
will feature a tasting of over 50 fine wines and international and domestic craft beers. Local breweries
Ipswich, Cape Ann Mercury and Harpoon, among others, will be pouring their spring offerings.
Professionals will be on hand with an assortment of fine wines from around the world.

Salem Restaurants such as The Old Spot, GuluGulu Cafe, 62 on the Wharf, Rockafellas and more will
tickle and tantalize your palate with delectable culinary delights! North Shore Artists will be offering an
eclectic variety of art to please your eye and warm your home. Boston singer-songwriter Katrin Roush will
be performing live - often compared to Bonnie Raitt, Katrin is spellbinding on stage, both soulful and
passionate. A siren to awaken the gods of spring!

Meet familiar characters from myth and legend and enjoy the goddesses and nymphs that wander the
“Garden of Earthly Delights.” Seek out The Oracle of Delphi to hear your fortune. Traditional ancient
attire is encouraged! This is Salem, after all. Experience the intoxicating power of this celebration on
March 15th from 3 - 6pm at Old Town Hall in beautiful, historic downtown Salem, Massachusetts.

We’re always happy to see any event that gives props to one of our favorite painters Hieronymus Bosch. Also, it’s great to have an opportunity to sample some great wines, beers and food. Make sure to mark your calendar for fun.

I did the wines of Italy class at Pamplemousse. It was great fun.

    G,

That’s great to hear. The $65 price tag put me off a bit since I didn’t know if it would be worth it. What are your thoughts? Was it money well spent?

I’ve taken a few of their classes and I think they are fantastic. The instructor, John is very knowledgable and funny. There is NO pretension there! It has certainly expanded my knowledge of wine and has enabled me to try varietals that I never knew existed.

I’d say it was money well spent. Across the two weeks we tasted 15 or 16 wines. Average bottle price was probably $20, with a high of $60 one night and $45 the other. Cheese, crackers and grapes were also served both nights. The pours were generous, and there was also a 15% discount on any wines purchased after the classes. I bought several bottles each night and took advantage of the discount.
